Today was the first three race day at this year’s Osprey Nationals at Mumbles YC on 12 August.

Breezes were offshore again, rising during the day to around 17 kts for the final race. Three races were held, all on Olympic triangles, of two triangles and one sausage. So the fleet enjoyed plenty of varieties of reaching, including quite frequent two sail reaches.

Winds continued to be quite shifty and patchy, even when the breezes picked up.

Yesterday’s leaders, DJ Edwards and Adam Bowers, from Tata SC, continued their form, taking a win in the first race of the day, followed by a second and third. The second race went to Martin Cooney and Peter Frith, while the windiest race of the afternoon went to heavyweights Terry Curtis/ Pete Greig. Piers Strong and Phil Angrave scored well in two races, but added a DSQ.

Overall, Edwards and Bowers lead, from Curtis/ Greig, with Strong/ Angrave close behind. The top ten includes three Under 21 helms, demonstrating the new blood which is coming into the class.

There are two days to go, with another five races scheduled.

Overall top 5 positions after Day 2, five races, one discard;

  1. D J Edwards & Adam Bowers, Tata SC, 7pts
  2. Terry Curtis and Peter Greig, Weymouth SC, 10pts
  3. Piers Strong and Phil Angrave, Poole YC, 11pts
  4. Martin Cooney and Peter Frith, Poole YC, 13pts
  5. Kevin Francis and Phil Male, Castle Cove SC, 26pts
